What is a Tire Balancing & Alignments service?

Lube Stop’s Tire Balancing & Alignments service involves adjusting the angles and balance of a vehicle’s wheels to allow for a smoother ride.  They may seem similar, but these are two different services.  Balancing adjusts the distribution of your vehicle’s weight across all wheels.  Alignment adjusts the angle of each wheel.  This service is important because when your wheels are balanced and aligned, you can enjoy a much smoother and safer ride.

What is Tire Balancing & Alignments service for?

Tire balancing is one of the recommended services listed in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Often confused with wheel alignment, tire balancing is used to ensure the best performance and longest service life for your vehicle’s tires.  Tire balancing provides a smooth reliable ride.  Tire balancing is different from wheel alignment, which involves the angle of the wheels and their relation to the ground.

Alignment focuses on the adjustment of a vehicle’s suspension, the system that connects a vehicle to its wheels.  It is not an adjustment of the tires or wheels themselves.  The key to proper alignment is adjusting the angles of the suspension of tires which affects how they make contact with the road.  The more your vehicle is driven, the less balanced the tires are.  So, a periodic tire balancing service is needed to bring back the initial balance.  Over time, tread wear causes the distribution of weight around the tire to change, which results in tires losing balance.  This may be felt in unusual shaking or vibration as you drive.  The vibration is usually felt at higher speeds.

Why Do I Need a Tire Balancing and Alignment service?

Nowadays, taking your vehicle in for regular tire balancing service is critical since today’s vehicles are designed to be lighter weight.  The heavier weight of older model vehicles helped smooth out the ride by better distributing the vehicle mass over the tires and better supporting the steering system’s vibration.  Tire imbalance can cause problems for both the vehicle and tires.
We do these balancing and adjustments so that our customers can avoid accidents from having the wrong weight distribution and alignment.  In other words, your car, truck or SUV will maneuver much better making your ride much safer.  Additionally, they will make for a much smoother and comfortable ride.

So, it is fair to conclude that balancing or adjusting your tires is NOT something you want to ignore.

That’s why we check your tires every visit.  We need to make sure you are aware of the issues and potential safety concerns.  We understand that it costs a bit up front, but could be a life saver in the long run.

How Often Do I Need It?

Ideally, you should have your tires balanced and adjusted every six months or every 5,000-10,000 km depending on how old the vehicle is and what type of roads it’s been driven on.  Of course, we should check your tire alignment and balance out anytime you have observed issues or have questions.  Your owner’s manual will also advise you to do these at various intervals.  Please check your manual.

Also, lean on us at Lube Stop for advice.  We use a system of processes called Precision Based Recommendations to help investigate a vehicle’s overall condition.  This system of inspection and trouble shooting helps us get a clearer picture of your car, truck, or SUV as it stands, today.  That is because it removes the guess work.  Learn more about this system below.

Context for these Services

Your vehicle uses an internal combustion engine.  This engine uses the combustion of fuel to power almost everything.  This is done when fuel alongside an air oxidizer and spark plugs creates a working fluid flow circuit inside a combustion chamber.

In your internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine.  The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, rotors and nozzles.  This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful work.
Typically, your combustion engine is fed with fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel or fuel oil.  Your engine is the hub for many things, including those listed below.

  • combustion chamber
  • cylinder head
  • camshaft
  • set of spark plugs
  • valvetrain
  • valves
  • rocker arms
  • pushrods
  • lifters
  • fuel injectors
  • pistons
  • connecting rods
  • engine block
  • crankcase
  • crankshaft
  • timing system
  • timing chain

All these work in unison to power all the other systems within your vehicle.  Without a fully functioning engine, everything else suffers.  So, let us at Lube Stop keep your engine functioning and everything else that relies on it.
