What is an Ignition Timing & Idling Checks service?

Lube Stop’s Ignition Timing & Idling Checks service is the inspection of the ignition system.  This inspection of the ignition system is from the engine combustion chambers all the way to the ignition switch.  The major components of the ignition system included in the inspection are the ignition switch, ignition coil, capacitor, contact breaker, distributor, and the combustion chambers.  If any component of your vehicle’s ignition system has damage or heavy contamination, you should have it fixed or replaced to avoid critical damage to the vehicle’s engine.  An ignition system inspection is required to control your vehicle’s internal emissions and to make sure your vehicle will pass an emissions test.

Lube Stop provides this service as needed.  To determine if it is needed, we look for signs that the ignition system is having issues.  So, a visual inspection to detect pollutants or damage inside the ignition system is done.  Following that, Lube Stop also inspects for grinding or clicking noise from the ignition system, steam or odd odour from your ignition coil, and decreased fuel efficiency.  If they are present, we recommend replacing or fixing the ignition system components.  If the customer agrees, then we proceed with the Ignition Timing & Idling Checks service.

So, always bring any indicators of trouble to the attention of our Lube Stop technicians.  These include signs of strange steam or leakage from the ignition system, grinding and clicking noise, and a decrease in fuel efficiency.  From there, we will trouble shoot and determine if you need to replace or fix your ignition system.

We do all this so you can enjoy the benefits of reliable engine performance and reduced internal emissions.

What is Ignition Timing for?

The main purpose of a vehicle’s ignition timing system is to advance or delay the timing of the spark so the fuel does not completely burn the instant the spark fires.  This highly affects engine performance and fuel efficiency.  Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, the layout of your vehicle ignition system may vary.  Setting the correct ignition timing is crucial in the performance of an engine and an exhaust system.  If the ignition timing is not set correctly, it allows the sparks to occur too soon or too late in the engine cycle which are often responsible for excessive vibrations and even engine damage.

The ignition timing affects many variables including engine service life, fuel efficiency, and engine performance.  The ‘best’ timing is also affected by many variables.  Modern engines, that are controlled in real-time by an engine control unit, use a computer to control the timing throughout the engine’s load range.  Older engines that use mechanical distributors rely on inertia and manifold vacuum in order to set the ignition timing throughout the engine’s load range.  Having an ignition system that is in good working condition allows your vehicle’s engine to perform better and longer, which means more power and longer service life of your engine.

These safety checks are included in Lube Stop’s Precision Based Recommendations process.  Specifically, they are included in their 37+ Point Inspections that are performed each time you drive into one of our shops.  There are 15 or more safety checks performed during this standard practice.  When an issue is detected, Lube Stop technicians bring those matters to your attention and make suggestions as to how to address them.  It is important to have a fully functioning car, truck, or SUV, but it’s also important to have a safe drive for you and your family.  So, when you come to Lube Stop, rest assured that we will be checking for both your vehicle’s health and your own personal safety while driving.

Why Do I Need an Ignition Timing & Idling Checks service?

The Ignition Timing & Idling Checks service is the inspection of your vehicle’s ignition system.  A well-maintained ignition system helps your vehicle engine deliver lots of benefits.  For example, it helps the engine perform better, prevents combustion inside the system, and reduces unnecessary ignition emissions.

We do these checks so that our customers can avoid problems with the ignition timing in their car, truck, or SUV.  The ignition system is an important maintenance item responsible for ensuring your engine works well and does not breakdown.  This is because when the timing is set correctly it does its job better.  For example, it protects the ignition system from sparks that can cause major damage to the exhaust system and engine.

So, it is fair to conclude that a faulty ignition system is NOT something you want to ignore.

That’s why we check the ignition timing every visit.  We need to make sure that it is set properly and functioning as it should.  We understand that it costs a little in the short run to have the ignition timing maintained, but it saves a lot in the long run.

How Often Do I Need It?

The ignition system should be checked each time you have service with Lube Stop.  And, of course, we should check it anytime you have observed issues.  Your owner’s manual will also advise you to do it at various intervals.  Please check your manual.

Also, lean on us at Lube Stop for advice.  We use a system of processes called Precision Based Recommendations to help investigate a vehicle’s overall condition.  This system of inspection and trouble shooting helps us get a clearer picture of your car, truck, or SUV as it stands, today.  That is because it removes the guess work.  Learn more about this system below.

Context for these Services

Your vehicle uses an internal combustion engine.  This engine uses the combustion of fuel to power almost everything.  This is done when fuel alongside an air oxidizer and spark plugs creates a working fluid flow circuit inside a combustion chamber.

In your internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine.  The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, rotors and nozzles.  This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful work.

Typically, your combustion engine is fed with fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel or fuel oil.  Your engine is the hub for many things, including those listed below.

  • combustion chamber
  • cylinder head
  • camshaft
  • set of spark plugs
  • valvetrain
  • valves
  • rocker arms
  • pushrods
  • lifters
  • fuel injectors
  • pistons
  • connecting rods
  • engine block
  • crankcase
  • crankshaft
  • timing system
  • timing chain

All these work in unison to power all the other systems within your vehicle.  Without a fully functioning engine, everything else suffers.  So, let us at Lube Stop keep your engine functioning and everything else that relies on it.

Maintaining your Vehicle

To do this, you must TAKE CARE of your vehicle.  That means changing the oil regularly.  It also means changing your filters regularly.  And, it means changing your fluids, lubricants, coolants and greases.  These maintenance parts don’t remain the same.  They get dirty, dusty, polluted, corroded and worn as you drive your vehicle from day to day.  So, if you want to extend the life of your car, truck or SUV, then you must maintain it and take care of it.

So, drop by our lube shops and get your oil changed, your filters changed, your fluids checked or flushed, your belts replaced … and so on.  We’re standing by!
