What is an Air Bag Light Checks service?

Lube Stop’s Air Bag Light Checks service is the inspection of your vehicle’s air bag and seat belt system to determine what is causing your airbag sensor to light up.  We do this inspection to ensure that your airbags are positioned and functioning properly to prevent harm to the driver and passengers in the case of an accident.

Warning Light Causes

There are several reasons why your vehicle may signal a warning to check your airbag.  Sometimes, it’s simply been turned off by accident and needs to be turned back on.  Sometimes, its because your sensor is just worn out and requires replacement.  Other times, it’s because something is interfering with the seat belt switch that detects if the seat belt is properly fastened.

And, don’t forget, your air bag light sometimes turns on if your vehicle was previously in an accident that caused the crash sensors to be activated, but not the actual air bag.  In this case, you will need to rest your airbag.  An additional consideration is that with the ability of seats to move forward and back, the sensor’s wiring harness sometimes stretches and frays.  This often causes complete malfunction.  So, you’ll need to repair it.

Testing the Sensor

By simply looking at the sensor light when you turn the vehicle on, we know if the sensor is at fault or not.  It will light up for 3 seconds then go out.  This indicates it is armed.  If it stays on, there’s an issue.

What is an Air Bag for?

Your air bag is a restraining device designed to inflate rapidly during a collision.  It prevents the driver and passenger from striking the steering wheel, dashboard, or the windshield.

Air bags are typically designed to inflate during moderate to critical crashes.  In doing so, they provide secondary protection to drivers and passengers who are already restrained with a seat belt.  In most cases, they inflate through pyrotechnic means and are prevented from operating more than once.

So, if your airbag light comes on, we strongly recommend you pay attention to it.  This light warns the driver of any issues with the air bag.  Ignoring the light when it’s on, is risky.

Context for these Services

Your vehicle uses an internal combustion engine.  This engine uses the combustion of fuel to power almost everything.  This is done when fuel alongside an air oxidizer and spark plugs creates a working fluid flow circuit inside a combustion chamber.

In your internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine.  The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, rotors and nozzles.  This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful work.

Typically, your combustion engine is fed with fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel or fuel oil.  Your engine is the hub for many things, including those listed below.

  • combustion chamber
  • cylinder head
  • camshaft
  • set of spark plugs
  • valvetrain
  • valves
  • rocker arms
  • pushrods
  • lifters
  • fuel injectors
  • pistons
  • connecting rods
  • engine block
  • crankcase
  • crankshaft
  • timing system
  • timing chain

All these work in unison to power all the other systems within your vehicle.  Without a full functioning engine, everything else suffers.  So, let us at Lube Stop keep your engine functioning and everything else that relies on it.

Maintaining your Vehicle

To do this, you must TAKE CARE of your vehicle.  That means changing the oil regularly.  It also means changing your filters regularly.  And, it means changing your fluids, lubricants, coolants and greases.  These maintenance parts don’t remain the same.  They get dirty, dusty, polluted, corroded, and worn as you drive your vehicle from day to day.  So, if you want to extend the life of your car, truck or SUV, then you must maintain it and take care of it.

So, drop by our lube shops and get your oil changed, your filters changed, your fluids checked or flushed, your belts replaced … and so on.  We’re standing by!
