What is a Diesel Exhaust Fluid Fills service?

Lube Stop’s Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Fills service is the replenishment of the diesel exhaust fluid which is a non-hazardous solution made of urea and-ionized water.  Its job is to reduce bad emissions in the exhaust and improve fuel efficiency.  This fluid is sprayed by the vehicle internal systems into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to break down dangerous nitrogen oxides emissions into harmless nitrogen and water to achieve optimum performance.  Keep in mind that this fluid is not a fuel additive and must never come into contact with diesel.  It is stored in a separate tank, typically with a blue filler cap.  It is required by environmental laws.

If your fluid is dirty or contaminated, it doesn’t circulate as well as it should.  That makes it ineffective at its filtering job.  So, when filling, ensure nothing gets into your tank other than the DEF itself.

Lube Stop provides this filling service as needed.  To determine if it is needed, we check the gauge on the dashboard to see if it is low.  If it’s low, we recommend filling the fluid to the customer.  When the customer concedes, then we proceed with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Fill service.

If the DEF is contaminated for whatever reason, we recommend the customer seek a professional mechanic to take care of it before it causes damage to other parts of the diesel engine and system.

What is diesel exhaust fluid for?

Diesel exhaust fluid is a non-hazardous mixture of  32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water.  Urea is a compound in Nitrogen that breaks to ammonia when heated.  Diesel exhaust fluid is initially comprised of (NH2)2CO.  When injected into the hot exhaust gas, the water evaporates leaving harmless components such as ammonia and isocyanic acid.

So, in these diesel vehicles, the exhaust gas from the engine is routed first through a particulate filter to catch all the soot and ash generated from burning what is a relatively impure fuel.  That takes care of the “rolling coal” aspect of old diesel engines that made them so unpopular before the ’90s.

From the particulate filter, the exhaust gas travels past a nozzle which sprays diesel exhaust fluid into the stream of gases.  The hot exhaust gas and DEF then enter the catalytic converter where the urea from the DEF and the exhaust gas react with a variety of metallic compounds to convert nitrogen dioxide and monoxide into nitrogen and water.  Nitrogen is the primary component of the air we breathe and is harmless to the environment.  Water is water.

Often, fluids also contain corrosion inhibitors.  This is because exhausts often contain a range of highly corrosive metals such as aluminum, cast iron, copper, brass, or solder.

Why Do I Need a Diesel Exhaust Fluid Fills service?

The Diesel Exhaust Fluid Fills service is the filling of your diesel exhaust fluid tank.  This essential fluid helps your vehicle exhaust system deliver lots of benefits.  For example, it keeps the system running better, it prevents corrosion inside the exhaust and unnecessary noise pollution.

We do these fluid top-offs so that our customers can avoid problems with the exhaust in their car, truck, or SUV.  The fluid is an important maintenance item responsible for ensuring your exhaust and the engine work well and do not break down.  This is because when fluid is clean it does its job better.  For example, it protects the exhaust system from contaminants that can cause major damage to the exhaust system and engine.

So, it is fair to conclude that you should NEVER let your DEF tank go empty.

That’s why we check the diesel exhaust fluid every visit.  We need to make sure that it is full and functioning as it should be in the vehicle.  We understand that it costs a little in the short run to fill this fluid tank.  But it saves a lot in the long run.

How Often Do I Need It?

The DEF fluid tank level should be checked each time you have service with Lube Stop.  Your owner’s manual will also advise you to regularly check the levels.

Also, lean on us at Lube Stop for advice.  We use a system of processes called Precision Based Recommendations to help investigate a vehicle’s overall condition.  This system of inspection and trouble shooting helps us get a clearer picture of your car, truck, or SUV as it stands, today.  That is because it removes the guess work.  Learn more about this system below.

Context for these Services

Your vehicle uses an internal combustion engine.  This engine uses the combustion of fuel to power almost everything.  This is done when fuel alongside an air oxidizer and spark plugs creates a working fluid flow circuit inside a combustion chamber.

In your internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine.  The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, rotors and nozzles.  This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful work.

Typically, your combustion engine is fed with fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel or fuel oil.  Your engine is the hub for many things, including those listed below.

  • combustion chamber
  • cylinder head
  • camshaft
  • set of spark plugs
  • valvetrain
  • valves
  • rocker arms
  • pushrods
  • lifters
  • fuel injectors
  • pistons
  • connecting rods
  • engine block
  • crankcase
  • crankshaft
  • timing system
  • timing chain

All these work in unison to power all the other systems within your vehicle.  Without a fully functioning engine, everything else suffers.  So, let us at Lube Stop keep your engine functioning and everything else that relies on it.
